Statement on .SU ccTLD status
In response to recent media reports regarding the possible retirement of the .SU ccTLD, we affirm that such information periodically emerges in the public domain but is not factually correct. The Registry (RosNIIROS) has no plans to shutdown the .SU ccTLD, and no formal actions have been initiated by ICANN* on this matter.
We find it necessary to emphasize the following:
1. The .SU ccTLD is an integral part of Russia’s national domain zone, alongside .RU and .РФ, in accordance with Order No. 216 of July 29, 2019, of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media “On Determining the List of Groups of Domain Names Constituting the Russian National Domain Zone”.
2. Pursuant to the ccTLD Retirement Policy adopted by ICANN in 2022, a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) may only be removed from the DNS root zone if the corresponding two-letter code is removed from the ISO 3166 standard. Currently, the "SU" code point remains listed in ISO 3166 with the status of "exceptionally reserved," which can be easily verified on the official website of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
3. The Registry has not received any notifications from PTI** regarding the removal of the .SU ccTLD from the DNS root zone. This was reaffirmed yesterday by ICANN Board Member Becky Burr during a public session at the ongoing ICANN82 Community Forum in Seattle.
Thus, there are no grounds for shutting down the .SU ccTLD, and no official steps have been taken in this direction by the international community.
The Registry (RosNIIROS) will continue to support and develop the .SU ccTLD in the interests of tens of thousands of its users worldwide.
